Addendum to river crossing

On the heels of my most recent post about crossing rivers, we had a special adventure last weekend crossing the Puembo Chico River no less than 16 times. Okay, that may be a bit of an exaggeration, depending on how you count. But Dillon did count! We crossed the river eight times on the way to the waterfall and eight times again on the way back. As Brynna would say with confidence, 8+8 is 16!

Dillon and I perfected our boot emptying skills. By the time we reached the waterfall, I was so completely soaked that I wound up swimming in the poza “Ecuadorian style” (ie fully clothed).

The amazing river crossing hike came after we first tromped up the hill behind our friend Johan— with his machete in tow — to visit a series of nine waterfalls in a smaller nearby river. Absolutely breathtaking.

At some point, I managed to drop my phone into the river (note to self, don’t store one’s phone in one’s brassiere when one is traversing rivers), but thanks to an overnight soak in a bowl of uncooked rice and plenty of good luck, the phone seems to have survived the dunk.

We were visiting the property of a family friend who is in the early stages of trying to develop the land for tourism. He is also working on developing a contract to bottle water from a natural spring that originates behind the falls. I hope he is able to tread lightly and preserve the tremendous natural beauty of the place because it was truly stunning.
